What is Fractional Distillation?
Fractional distillation is a process used to separate a mixture of liquids that have different boiling points. This method is highly effective for separating liquids with close boiling points, making it ideal for applications that require high levels of purity and separation. As the mixture is heated, components with lower boiling points vaporize first, rise through a column packed with fractionating material, and then condense back into liquid form. The different fractions are then collected and processed separately.
Working Principle
- Reboiler: The mixture is heated in a reboiler (glass vessel), which is placed in a heating bath to generate vapor.
- Fractional Column: Vapors rise through a fractionating column, which is packed with material that provides increased surface area, ensuring better separation of the components.
- Condensation: As the vapor rises and cools, it condenses into liquid fractions, which are collected in receivers.
- Reflux: To improve separation, some of the condensed liquid can be returned to the column for further distillation (reflux).
- Collection & Drainage: The top products are sub-cooled and collected in receivers, while the bottom product is drained from the reboiler through a drain valve.
